In a surprising – and welcome – turn of events I was asked to come into Truro to be interviewed about the Dad’s Support Groups I held in the lead up to Christmas, as part of Anoushka Williams’s BBC Radio Cornwall slot ‘New Beginnings’ on her evening show on 29th December.

In getting the word out to Dads who may be interested in the free support groups I was offering in the lead up to Christmas, I posted the flyer I’d created up to a few related Facebook groups, and Anoushka’s producer, Maddie, saw it and got in touch with me, just before Christmas.
The recording from the interview 🙂
We had a brief chat on the phone, and I agreed to come onto the show in the ‘Twixtmas’ period (that bit between Christmas and the New Year) where Anoushka would chat to me about the groups I had run.
Being on the radio – a first for me!
It was the first time I’d been broadcast out live, so understandably (at least from my regard) I was a little nervous about being on live radio. That said, I was also there to talk about the free support groups for fathers that I had set up and run before Christmas – and that is something I was excited to talk about. Also, having been part of the Cornwall Counselling Institute since July 2025 I had experienced a fair amount of ‘Imposter Syndrome’ in that new-to-me teaching and tutoring role, and so I was at least a little familiar with being nervous, or being fairly OK with nerves.
All that said both Maddie and Anoushka were very friendly and excellent at their jobs, and their warm and enthusiastic welcome allowed me to feel very much at ease. With a brief tutorial on where exactly to speak (into ‘the triangle’ of the mic!), and a quick hello while the band ‘EMF’ sang ‘Unbelievable’ in the background, all of a sudden there I was talking about roasting chickens and beef at Christmas and my not so hot tips at how to get Yorkshire Puddings to rise in the oven!
We did talk a fair amount about Dad’s Support Groups, of course, as well as other things like the challenges of parenting, but you may just want to have a listen to the bit about chickens and Yorkshire puddings!
